Recently, according to statistics from the market research agency Gartner, Inc., the chip spending of the world's top ten original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will decrease by 7.6% in 2022, accounting for 37.2% of the entire market. It is worth noting that eight of the top ten buyers will reduce their chip purchases in 2022, and only Samsung Electronics and Sony are increasing. Huawei chip purchases were cut the most, down 19.4%.

Most of the top 10 semiconductor customers are major PC and smartphone OEMs, said Masatsune Yamaji, senior director analyst at Gartner, “In 2022, inflationary and recessionary pressures have significantly weakened consumer demand for PCs and smartphones, resulting in None of the major OEMs can ramp up unit production and shipments."

In addition, China's zero-clearing policy during the epidemic has also led to severe material shortages and short-term disruptions in the electronics supply chain. Semiconductor shortages persist in the automotive, networking and industrial electronics markets, raising chip average selling prices (ASPs) and accelerating semiconductor revenue growth in these markets. The above factors have led to a decline in the share of head OEMs in the total semiconductor spending for the entire year of 2022 compared to 2021.

However, the top ten chip buyers in 2022 have not changed from 2021. Among them, Apple and Samsung Electronics maintained the top two positions, and Huawei maintained the seventh position.

Although Apple cut its spending by 2.6%, it still ranks first among the top ten buyers of semiconductors for the fourth consecutive year. Their chip spending in 2022 will be US$67.01 billion, accounting for 11.1% of the market. As we all know, Apple's internal design of devices is constantly shifting to self-developed application processors, so Apple's spending on computing micro-processing units (MPUs) will decrease by 11.7% in 2022, but spending on non-memory chips will increase by 2.8%.

Samsung Electronics ranked second with a 2.2 percent increase in chip spending in 2022. The company said the smartphone market will shrink in 2022, with the mass market most affected. Ben Suh, executive vice president of investor relations at Samsung, said that the business environment has deteriorated significantly in the fourth quarter of 2022, and the economic slowdown caused by global comorbid economic problems has led to weak demand. But the company gained more market share in the smartphone market due to its leading position in the foldable phone field and benefited from China's epidemic policy that affected its rival Apple, leading to higher semiconductor spending in 2022.

Lenovo ranked third with 3.5%, Dell rose to fourth with 3%, BBK also ranked fifth with 3%, and Xiaomi, Huawei, HP, Sony, and Hon Hai Precision Industry ranked sixth to tenth respectively.

Due to the booming sales of the PlayStation 5 video game console, Sony's chip spending will grow the fastest in 2022, reaching 16.5%, and its ranking has risen from tenth last year to ninth. However, production could not be ramped up to meet demand levels due to persistent severe chip shortages and logistics network disruptions throughout the year.

The new PS5 is equipped with a chip code-named Oberon Plus, which is also semi-customized by Sony to AMD. The biggest change is that the process has been replaced by a 6nm process from the original 7nm process of TSMC, thus reducing the chip area from 300mm2 to 260mm2 Below, theoretically, lower power consumption and better heat dissipation can be achieved.

It is worth noting that among all the OEMs that have reduced their chip purchases, Huawei has reduced the most due to the impact of US sanctions. Huawei's chip spending in 2022 will be US$12.01 billion, a drop of 19.4% from 2021. This is followed by HP, whose purchases have been cut by 18.9% compared to 2021.

By category of chips purchased, memory chips are the worst-performing device category, accounting for about 25% of semiconductor sales in 2022, with the top 10 OEMs accounting for 49.2% of memory spending. As the market has not improved for a long time, the price of memory chips will plummet in the second half of 2022, and profits will also compress revenue, resulting in a 10% decline in revenue.
